Chuck Read Chuck's Full Bio
Chuck is a beautiful gaited chestnut with a long wavy mane who takes your breath away when he comes flying across the pasture.
Chuck came from the sale barn in Kalona, Iowa. Initially, he was fearful of us and the horses around him and was something of a loner, but it was very clear he wanted to make friends with everybody. Although he was clearly worried, he has always been completely cooperative and is unbelievably easy to handle.
We expect that Chuck will make an excellent lead line horse.

Gypsy Read Gypsy's Full Bio
Gypsy was our first rescue horse, before Winding Road was even in existence. She’s the one who started it all.
Gypsy came from a nice family, but was suffering from lack of shelter and proper nutrition. They did not know anything of her history. Upon arrival, she was a virtual bag of bones and was not at all fond of people, and nearly impossible to catch in an open pasture.
She has some broken teeth which precludes determining age. Her back is swayed; her face grows whiter each year. She has cataracts. She’s old….and she’s beautiful!

Pocket Read Pocket's Full Bio
Pocket’s story began when a local man with a mowing business was working on a property in the Kansas City area. The family was in the process of moving. He saw a pony tied to the fence and asked, “What’s up with that?”
The reply: “We’re taking the kids to town, and then we’re going to come back and shoot him.” Fortunately for this severely foundered pony, the next sentence was, “Don’t do that!” His hooves had gone for so long without attention, they had grown up in a curl that reached to his knees and down again, the quintessential “elf shoes.”

Red Read Red's Full Bio
At 29 years, Red is the senior member of the retirement gang. Local legend has it he went to the NFR in Las Vegas seven years in a row as a heading horse, and one cowboy said he thought he even won it one year. His legs show the wear and tear of a champion athlete, but he still walks soundly—just slower than he used to. Retired from the life of a rodeo cowboy, Red eventually became the companion and mount of a very special young lady with physical and mental challenges. Together, they rode in parades and competed safely and successfully in 4-H.

Sky Read Sky's Full Bio
In his lifetime, Sky has been a parade horse, a show horse on the West Coast, run timed events, been on a drill team, ridden trails, had a rope swung off him, served on the Wichita Mounted Police Force and we’re just not sure what he hasn’t done. He was injured while straining to get himself out of some quicksand—and that compromised his soundness along with some hoof issues, and he was donated to the Wichita Police Force. Eight hour shifts on pavement proved too much for him. He was then passed to a home where he served as a play day/fun show horse for two little girls—quiet and willing, he just wasn’t fast enough and Sky was once again looking for a home. We are so thankful his winding road led him here, because he is a truly amazing horse and a rescue favorite.
